Elders Gatherings
Carrying on from our annual Elders Forum, we have begun to have monthly ‘Elders Gatherings’.
Knowing and understanding that working with ‘Family Violence’ is a difficult area of work for example the ‘shame factor’ that these families would often feel and for some the mere fact of ‘raising the issue’ of violence is hard within a family.
Knowing and understanding this for Helem Yumba to work effectively in our community, we feel that as a service we need the acknowledgement of our elders in our communities. By having these monthly gatherings we are giving the elders a voice.
Giving the elders a voice allows Helem Yumba to work with ‘direction’ fully knowing that we are following Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols, with the full acknowledgement of the Elders.
